Intro to Rope Bowls with Jill

Take the next step in rope sewing with Jill in Intro to Rope Bowls! If you’ve already learned the basics of sewing with cotton rope—perhaps in Jill’s Rope Tray class—now it’s time to start shaping those coils upward and turn them into a beautiful, functional bowl.

In this 3-hour class, Jill will guide you through creating a fabric-wrapped rope bowl using 3/16" cotton rope and colorful strips of batik fabric. You’ll build on the basic coiling and zigzag techniques while learning how to control the angle of your work to create the sides and shape of your bowl. Finish it off with an optional coordinating button for a fun decorative touch.

Class Fee: $25 without kit or $55 with kit

For convenience, the optional kit includes 27 feet of 3/16" cotton rope, batik fabric, and a denim/jeans needle. Students purchasing the kit will still need to bring their sewing machine, coordinating thread, tools, and general sewing supplies.

If you are not purchasing a kit, please bring:

• Sewing machine capable of a zigzag stitch
• 27 ft. of 3/16" 100% cotton rope (we recommend Mountain Thread Co.)
• 1/4 yard or fat quarter of batik fabric (batiks are recommended because they fray less when cut into strips)
• Coordinating thread
• Jeans/denim needle
• Rotary cutter
• 12" or 24" ruler
• Clothespin
• A couple of small binding clips
• General sewing supplies
• Optional coordinating button for finishing your bowl

Skill Level: This is a next-step rope sewing class. Students should already be comfortable with the basic technique of coiling rope and joining it with a zigzag stitch. Jill’s Rope Tray class is excellent preparation.
